The Top 5 Laser Hair Removal Myths

Laser hair removal has been available as a FDA approved treatment for nearly 20 years. Even though it’s a relatively old and well-known procedure, some people might have misconceptions about it which scare them off from making an appointment for themselves. However, with better technology and advancements in lasers today, the procedure and the results it delivers have improved overall. Not everyone knows that—so below, we address some of the most common myths and misconceptions about this treatment.

Why Being Attractive Pays Off At Work

If you think that looks don’t matter, think again. When it comes to certain careers, keeping up appearances is (unfortunately) important.  At SpaMedica, we’ve seen several lawyers, actors and bankers come in for treatments. Whether it’s for Botox injections or facials, it’s usually for the same reason. These professionals want to keep their youthful looks to stay competitive in their career.

Why would they feel the need to compete? It’s because they want to get a promotion or keep their upper-management position, according to Toronto plastic surgeon Dr. Mulholland. These clients want to look and feel confident rather than looking “haggard” in front of their colleagues and clients. “It’s about looking your best in a very competitive business environment,” says Dr. Mulholland.

It’s easy to say that attractive people get things handed to them in life easily, but numerous studies have proven that this is often the case—at least when it comes to jobs. Daniel Hamermesh, a professor in Economics at The University of Texas at Austin, reported that attractive men and women earn 3-4 more percent than people with below average looks. Attractive people get hired quicker and earn promotions faster in comparison. They’re also rewarded with more job benefits and are revered as valuable assets to the company.

Why being attractive pays off at work
Source: Viewzone.com Symmetrical faces are considered as signs of good health and attractiveness.

What makes someone attractive?

Each individual will always have their own preferences in what they find physically attractive. But in general, there are certain traits that are considered universally attractive. According to this Business Insider article, people generally find clear and smooth skin attractive. It’s seen as a sign of health, especially in the faces of women. Facial symmetry is another factor of what makes someone considered as good looking.

The traits that men find attractive in women are a high forehead, high cheekbones, full lips, big eyes and a thin chin. Women prefer a big jaw and broad chin in men.

Men are getting treatments too

It’s not just women who are keeping up their looks. Men are no exception to treatments, both surgical and non-surgical. To compete with younger colleagues, these men maintain their looks through facials, laser hair removal or Botox injections. “Over 20 percent of my clients are men,” says Dr. Mulholland.

Should there really be a big emphasis on our appearances when it comes to getting jobs? Apparently it does matter. A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology showed that having facial blemishes or disfigurements lowered job candidates’ prospects of snagging the job. In one of their studies, 38 managers conducted face-to-face interviews with candidates who had facial birthmarks. These highly qualified managers with years of experience couldn’t keep their attention on these interviewers because of their looks. The managers had difficulty managing their reactions to the job seekers’ looks, which ultimately impacted their job prospects negatively.

It’s vain and unfair how our culture works, no doubt. That’s how the nature of the workforce for many professions today, though. Not everyone is born with the same skills or looks. Skills can be learned and perfected and better looks can be attained—whether that means it’s by grooming or cosmetic surgery.

Don't Skimp Out On Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal treatments can be risky if performed by inexperienced providers.

Who doesn’t love a good deal? Sales and discounts give you a rush because you feel like you’re saving money on that new shirt or phone you bought. It can sometimes feel like an impulsive reaction to buy something because it's just so cheap compared to other prices you've seen. But think twice about certain things such as unusually cheap non-surgical treatments like laser hair removal, especially at establishments without licensed medical professionals. Sometimes the results could be poor and even dangerous because of the lack of medically licensed or poorly trained staff.

What’s a medi-spa?

Medi-spas offer treatments like laser hair removal, laser tattoo removal and dermal fillers unlike a regular spa. Ideally, medical doctors, aestheticians and nurses should be a part of the staff at medi-spas. Depending on what treatment you’re having, the individual who’s treating you should be well-experienced and licensed to do so at a medi-spa.

The risk of so-called medi-spas

Tons of establishments market themselves as medi-spas with limited (or any) licensed staff on site. This sounds obvious, but the lasers used in laser hair removal treatments are incredibly hot. These powerful lasers can leave burns and scars, especially when they’re operated by inexperienced hands.

It’s sadly common for dermatologists to see patients who suffer from complications after getting laser hair removal treatments from ill-trained individuals.  The Canadian Dermatology Association surveyed doctors across the country and found that “73% of  dermatologists surveyed have treated patients for burns, scars or other wounds sustained after seeking laser treatments.”

The medical aesthetics industry is unregulated

Technically, anyone can legally operate lasers and perform laser hair removal treatments. You don’t have to be a doctor or a dermatologist. You can even buy laser equipments online on Kijiji without any training or credentials. With this loophole, it’s quite simple to make money off of oblivious patients without having real qualifications.

Another issue to consider is that a medi-spa or salon may not have enough lasers that are right for your skin type. Sometimes the laser(s) they have can’t remove all of your hair. According to this article, patients with light skin and dark hair get the most effective laser hair removal results. This Toronto Star article reports that people with dark or tanned skin are at a higher risk of side effects because of the extra pigment in their skin. If the wrong machine is used or the laser’s settings aren’t adjusted, the patient can leave with burns or discoloration.

Get laser hair removal treatments by licensed medical professionals.
Dr. Mulholland at SpaMedica performing a laser hair removal treatment. SpaMedica has multiple lasers and wavelengths.
Your best bet is to visit a centre that has multiple lasers and wavelengths that can be used throughout your treatments. This is important because while one laser can permanently remove some hair follicles, a different laser is needed to remove the rest. Multiple lasers should be used if you want the best results.

Don't be afraid to ask questions

It’s always stressed to do your research before any procedure. Laser hair removal is no exception. It might be tempting to choose an establishment with dirt cheap prices, but don’t let the cost of treatments sway you. Find out if the treatment provider is a licensed doctor, nurse or dermatologist or if there are any on-site. You really don’t want to deal with buyer’s remorse, especially when it can leave you with scars and burns.

Pre-Juvenation: Can You Be Too Young For Botox and Fillers?

There’s no such thing as being young forever, but at least you could look like it.

Ageing tends to make people anxious. Fears such as not looking as attractive, desirable or healthy anymore creep in. You’d think that it’s people in their 30s and beyond who make appointments for Botox and dermal fillers to treat and prevent wrinkles, but it’s not only them. People in their 20s and sometimes even younger are choosing to have non-surgical procedures to keep their youthful looks.

This trend is called pre-juvenation; this is where someone prevents the signs of ageing before it even happens. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that people between the ages of 20-29 accounted for 556,558 non-invasive procedures in 2013. Laser hair removal was the top performed procedure. After that, it’s Botox, microdermabrasion and soft tissue fillers that were the most sought out.

Developing lines and wrinkles is inevitable. But pre-juvenation is the concept of preventing these natural developments from forming in the first place. No doubt, this trend has gotten people divided. Some people think that pre-juvenation is totally fine and a good preventative measure.

For example, Dr. Kenneth Arndt published an article in JAMA Dermatology stating that it’s never too early to use Botox if a person wants to maintain a youthful appearance. Other people, surgeons included, believe pre-juvenation is unnecessary. They think young people shouldn’t be getting Botox before they even see wrinkles because it’s “overkill”.

Dr. Arndt says he doesn’t agree with treating children or teenagers, but he does say it’s reasonable to consider getting Botox treatments when people begin to feel bothered by things such as frown or forehead lines. His reasoning? “It’s easier and more effective to inhibit progression than come in 10 years later and take them away.”

Is pre-juvenation the only way to avoid wrinkles?

Make sure to wear sunscreen to avoid sun damage and wrinkle formation.

Of course, Botox and dermal fillers aren’t the only ways to maintain good, supple looking skin. How you take care of your skin and diet is important too. Wearing sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is always stressed to keep your skin protected from sunspots or decrease your chances of developing skin cancer. It’s not only the summertime you should be wearing sunscreen—lather it on all year. Even though the sun’s not blaring through the sky in the winter, you can still get sun damaged skin especially if you do winter sports.

Facial animation like frowning and smiling also influences wrinkle and line formation. Constant frowning can develop glabella lines, also known as the “11’s” between your eyebrows. If your skin’s been damaged by the sun, you have a higher chance of developing lines. Since sun damage breaks down the skin’s collagen and elastin, your skin thins out, making it difficult to maintain a smooth appearance.

If the thought of wrinkles terrify you, know that there are plenty of preventative measures you can do. Whether it’s pre-juvenation treatments or maintaining a good skincare regime, you can keep those youthful looks if you really want to.

Hair Transplants: 4 Surprising Areas Where You Can Get Them

When you think of hair transplants, you probably imagine these procedures happening on the head. That’s not always the case. Hair transplantation can thicken the hair density of a few different areas of the face and body. This surgical technique works by transferring hair follicles from one part of the body (donor site) to an area where there’s a lack of hair (recipient site). So if hair transplants aren’t just restoring heads of thinning hair, where else can they work?

Eyebrows

Source: Beautyhigh.com

It’s all about thick eyebrows these days. Remember during the 90s when pencil-thin brows were in? Not so much anymore. Celebrities like Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins are known for their full eyebrows and played major roles in starting the fascination with bold brows.

Some women go in for eyebrow hair transplants because they can’t grow back their hair after years of over-plucking. Others may have medical conditions that lead to thin eyebrows. For most people, though, they’re just looking to change up their eyebrows’ appearance. After all, eyebrows do make a huge difference in framing a person’s face and how old they look.

Chest

While some men prefer to have a bare and smooth chest, others are actually looking to get a fuller chest of hair. Men may not be able to grow hair in this area because of genetics or past laser hair removal treatments. Accidents and burns are also culprits that would make hair growth difficult.

So where do these hairs come from to make your chest hair fuller? They come from your scalp. Even though these hairs will be on your chest, they’ll continue to grow like regular hair. You should trim them regularly, unless you’re fine with extremely long chest hair. These hairs remain permanently on your chest after transplantation.

Face

I’m pretty sure you’ve noticed tons of men rocking thick beards around the city. Some of them can just naturally grow thick and even facial hair but not all men are born equal—that’s why facial hair transplants are a big deal right now. This procedure can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000.

It’s a steep price but that doesn’t stop men from gravitating towards it. According to this CBC article, a study conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery shows the number of facial hair transplants increased by 9.5% globally from 2010 to 2012.

Pubic region

According to this article, hair restoration to the pubic area is a booming business in South Korea. That’s because pubic hair is considered as a sign of sexual health and fertility. While Brazilian waxes and laser hair removal for pubic hair is super common in North America, Korean women want to transplant the hair from their heads to their lady bits.

It makes you think twice about cultural norms and expectations of what’s considered sexually attractive, doesn’t it? This 2-4 hour procedure costs a little over $2,000.

Hair really is an important feature for many of us. Some people treat their hair as a reflection of who they are or as a fashion statement. It’s also a deeply personal thing—people may have specific reasons to have or not have hair in certain areas of their bodies. Regardless, it’s fascinating to see that hair transplantation can be done in so many areas of the body today.

8. Dr. Mulholland never operates on teenagers. “Generally the closer women are to age 20—before they’ve had some life experience—the less confident they are about body image. It’s hard to figure out who you are then, let alone confuse it with surgery,” he says.

18. He invented the Pan G Lift, a non-surgical treatment that provides results similar to facelifts.

19. He and his team have over 30 years of experience in hairtransplantation and have successfully placed millions of grafts.

20. The original FotoFacial procedure was co-developed by Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr. and Dr. Mulholland. This popular procedure is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in North America.

FotoFacial treatments use radiofrequency, intense pulsed light and infrared energy. They’re pulsed gently on the skin to target facial spider veins, fine lines, blemishes and brown spots on the face, neck, chest and hands.

Laser Hair Removal: Do Women Prefer Bare or Hairy Men?

Do you know what I’m talking about when you first starting dating someone and you spend a lot of time trying to look good and attractive to impress them? Even in the honeymoon period of relationships, you probably put in a lot of effort to keep your partner impressed.

You want to reel your partner in and look as attractive as you can be—who doesn’t do this? Humans are visual creatures after all. Perhaps you’ll fit in extra workouts at the gym or spend a lot more time grooming and putting together outfits.

A big part of this whole grooming and pampering stage involves your hair. Trying new hairstyles and cutting your hair is a given, but what about shaving or permanently removing body hair with laser hair removal? Of course, men and women’s preferences on body hair will always differ from person to person. However, lots of studies show that women do have specific preferences when it comes to men and their grooming habits.

Here are results from one study that Remington Products published:
  •       71% of the surveyed U.S women prefer men to trim their backs.
  •     33% of women preferred a man’s back to be completely bare.
  •     53% of the women who are casually dating or divorced think men should trim their chest.
  •     43% of the women preferred men to keep all of their chest hair.
  •     17% of women prefer men without any hair on their chest.

Preferences of body hair vary from person and culture. One study shows that 80% of surveyed Turkish and Slovakian women like men to be smooth and bare.

If you do personally prefer to have little to no hair, laser hair removal will give you what you want. Treatments get rid of hair just about anywhere on your body. It could be an area as small as your fingers or toes or as large as your back. Below are some common body areas we remove hair from.

Underarms

Shaving underarms is pretty much second nature for women, especially when it’s bikini season and summertime. You can’t really get away without shaving when you’re wearing tank tops like you can during the winter when you’re covered in thick sweaters. Laser hair removal for underarms is considered a small zone, so each treatment costs $199.

Back and Chest

When men book laser hair removal treatments at SpaMedica, it’s usually to remove hair on their back and chests. Dr. Mulholland, a Toronto plastic surgeon, says when men have a lot of hair in these areas, they tend to go through a lot of dress shirts—it gets embarrassing in social situations and not to mention it becomes a hassle to constantly go through several shirts regularly. The back is considered an extra large zone; each treatment starts at $499.

Legs

Keeping legs bare and smooth is another region that majority of women do as part of their grooming routine. Especially during the summer, it’s essential to have bare legs in the summer when you’re rocking shorts and skirts all day. Really, no matter what season it is, you can’t get away with letting leg hairs go wild if you have to dress up for an event or have a hot date that leads to a little more. Legs are considered a large zone, so each laser hair removal treatment costs $399.

Free Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Until March 15, 2015, SpaMedica is offering a free laser hair removal package when you purchase any body contouring package. You’ll get 5 free laser hair removal treatments on extra small zones. Interested? Go on and book your appointment online now or call us at 1-877-712-8367.

New Year, New You: Look Even Better With These Skin Treatments

Everyone always says it every year, but 2014 has really gone by so fast. In a matter of hours, we’ll be ringing in a new year. Have you accomplished some of your resolutions? That’s great if you did, and it’s still fine if you didn’t. New Year resolutions are always about improving yourself or your circumstances. It’s a good time to try to set goals to live and look better than the year before.

Why not start with making beauty resolutions to have even better skin for 2015? Whether that means getting rid of wrinkles, hair or tattoos you don’t want, we have a list of treatments you should try out. Below are non-surgical treatments that can firm and clear up your skin so you look awesome all year round.

Botox

Before and after photo of Botox patient

When Botox first emerged a few decades ago, many people were skeptical of the treatment. “Is it safe?” “Won’t it just make my face look frozen?” Patients and the media frequently asked these questions. There’s no doubt that some people are still reserved about Botox, but the attitude towards it is much more relaxed today with so much information available now. And plus, it’s the most popular non-surgical treatment year after year.

Botox, a purified protein named botulinum toxin A, relaxes muscle areas by blocking nerves impulses which trigger contractions. This helps to soften wrinkles on your face. Results usually last up to 6 months.

It’s like maintenance—a few injections of Botox here and there will keep unwanted wrinkles and lines away. It’s pretty common for people in their 20s to get Botox to prevent wrinkles from showing up in the first place. These treatments have been called “pre-juvenation”.

Laser Hair Removal

Who doesn’t like smooth skin? It’s a hassle to constantly shave and wax every couple of days and weeks. Maybe you’re frustrated with always busting out the razors to scrape away hair during the summer. Laser hair removal is a way to quit that routine for good.

With faster and better lasers, men can get the hair on their backs removed within 20 minutes. Hair on a woman’s whole body could be removed within that same amount of time. To permanently remove 80% of the hair, patients should expect to have 4-5 laser hair removal sessions. Different lasers and wavelengths are used depending on your skin and hair type.

Skin Tightening For Your Body and Face

With age and genetics comes droopy skin. Maybe you’ve noticed that your neck or cheeks don’t look as firm and tight as they did before. SpaMedica is equipped with several non-surgical treatments that combat loose skin. These treatments can treat your face or different areas on your body.

Body

Exilis is one of the available non-surgical fat reduction and skin tightening treatments to firm up your body. It’s a device that uses radiofrequency to contour your body and reduce fat without surgical intervention. Drop in the clinic once a week for 4-6 weeks and after that, you’ll see improvement in your figure and skin. These treatments are great alternative options for people who don’t want to deal with recovery time or surgery like liposuction and tummy tucks.

Face

If a facelift is out of the question for you, then be happy that the Pan G Lift is an amazing non-surgical alternative to firm up your skin. It’s a series of treatments that uses radiofrequency energy, ultrasound and more to lift your face and neck without any need for cuts.

The Pan G Lift lifts up droopy brows, cheeks, jowls and neck—it also targets other skin concerns such as wrinkles and spider veins. Each treatment lasts for one hour. Right after your appointment, you can go back to work or normal activities. It’s that simple.

Laser Tattoo Removal

So what if wrinkles or droopiness isn’t even your concern? Maybe getting rid of a tattoo is on your mind. Starting off the New Year by erasing an embarrassing or poorly designed tattoo is a pretty good way to renew yourself in 2015. Long gone is the idea that tattoos are forever; that’s far from the case now with the booming laser tattoo removal industry.

The PicoSure laser is the latest laser in the industry that’s annihilating tattoos better and faster than before. With the PicoSure, the amount of treatments you’ll need is cut dramatically compared to other lasers. After 4 treatments, you can see 90% of your tattoo cleared. Compare that number to older lasers that require up to 16 treatments for tattoo clearance.

Start The Year With Enhanced Skin

If enhancing your skin and appearance is on your mind as beauty resolutions for the New Year, we hope we’ve provided some good options and insight for you to look into. Leave a comment or book an appointment online if you have any questions!

Happy New Year and best wishes for all you lovely people.

5 Essential Tips about Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal at Spamedica Toronto by Dr.Mulholland

Dr. Stephen Mulholland Performing Laser Hair Removal on a Patient in his Toronto Med Spa SpaMedica

Hot, summer days are long gone (unless you’re heading on vacation…lucky you!) and showing bare skin is no longer an option. Even if you don’t want to admit it, ladies aren’t shaving their legs as often anymore because they’re hidden in pants or leggings in the winter. But imagine if you don’t have to bother buying razors and shaving unwanted hair a few times a week once the summer hits? Laser hair removal in Toronto gives you that option.

It’s affordable, faster and better than ever. It spares you the time of constantly grooming and worrying about stubble showing on your legs. So, here are our 5 essential laser hair removal tips for you to know before you book your treatments:

1.  Lasers remove body hair faster than before

Better and faster lasers are now available so that body hair removal is much faster. Even men with hairy backs can have their hair removed in 20 minutes. The Vectus laser at SpaMedica is fast enough to get rid of a man’s chest and back hair in 20 minutes. Clients see 80% of their hair removed after 4-5 treatments. Permanent hair removal is possible in just a few treatments.

2.  Different lasers are used for different skin types

In the past, laser hair removal for dark skin types was considered risky. Lack of training and availability of the right techniques and lasers for dark skin types was the problem. Since dark skin has more melanin, there's higher risk of scarring or blistering if the treatment isn’t performed well. Now, lasers and trained professionals are able to target and treat hairs on dark skin safely. Longer wavelengths and a variety of lasers are used for Asian, black and olive skin types.

3.  Men are big consumers of laser hair removal

It’s always assumed that men just don’t do cosmetic procedures. That’s not the case, especially when it comes to laser hair removal in Toronto. Men typically drop in for sessions to remove unwanted hair from their chests and backs. It’s a super common treatment for men—a report from 2013 shows that 190,546 procedures were performed on men. Facial hair may be in, but body hair? Not so much.

4.  Licensed individuals should perform laser hair removal for safest results

It seems like you can get this treatment done in just about any corner in the city. Many businesses and even nail salons offer laser hair removal in Toronto. Prices may be cheap or these places offer Groupons or promotional values—that doesn’t mean you’ll get the best results. There should be licensed staff or doctors present at a proper medi-spa. That’s often not the case when visiting businesses that falsely advertise themselves as medi-spas. The person who’s handling powerful and scorching lasers could be unlicensed or inexperienced. Not a good thought to have, in our opinion.

5.  Have treatment at a clinic to access multiple lasers for efficient hair removal

Avoid booking your laser hair removal Toronto sessions at an obscure place. Do your research and visit a medi-spa or clinic that has board licensed doctors or dermatologists. You’ll have more confidence that these people know what they’re doing. If there was a chance of complication, they’re experienced and trained enough to advise you on your next steps. Properly equipped facilities will also have several lasers to treat different skin types and hairs.

Take these tips and consider them when you’re researching where to have your treatments done. Don’t be afraid to ask the practitioner questions because the more you know, the better you’ll be prepared.
