5 Wrong Assumptions About Plastic Surgery
Like almost everything else in life, plastic surgery just
happens to be one of the topics where people make assumptions. These
assumptions tend to stem from word-of-mouth or just a lack of information. If
you haven’t noticed, we’re all about talking about and debunking common plastic
surgery myths here at SpaMedica. Below are a few widespread assumptions and
comments that we hear about various procedures, so we wanted to share some
insight and answers to them.
Assumption #1: Botox gives a frozen
face
Botox has long had the reputation of giving people that
frozen, startled look. A lot of people will think of celebrities who had not so
great results after Botox injections like Nicole Kidman. That stems from
overdoing the treatment which results in an unnatural appearance. Botox
treatments shouldn’t erase all movement in your face—ideally, it’s meant to
soften lines or wrinkles.
With your plastic surgeon, you’ll decide where you want to
see improvements on your face. By injecting just enough units of Botox in your
areas of concern, your end results should look natural and not frozen. And if
your treatments are done well, no one should even know that you had anything done.
Assumption #2: I can use my friend
or family member’s fat to transfer to my own body
Procedures that involve fat transfer like Brazilian butt lifts
or fat grafting to the breasts require taking fat from one area and then
transferring it to the butt or breasts. You can’t use someone else’s fat in
these procedures. Your immune system simply can’t recognize another person’s
fat and would reject their fat if this was attempted. Even if you have an
identical twin, there’s still a possibility that the fat would be rejected.
Another risk of using someone else’s fat is disease transmission.
Assumption #3: Men don’t get plastic
surgery
Women are the ones who are always pegged as the ones who are
most concerned with their appearance. With this mindset, the assumption is that
women are the people who undergo plastic surgery. According to recent
statistics from a RealSelf survey, men have been increasingly seeking plastic
surgery procedures. 73% of doctors say their male patients have increased in
the last year.
These men are most interested in:
- Botox and fillers
- Eyelid surgery
- Body contouring procedures
- Male breast reduction
Men are now more open about wanting to maintain their appearance and will undergo treatments if they feel compelled to.
Assumption #4: Liposuction will help
me achieve my target weight
Liposuction is often seen as a method to lose a lot of
weight. That’s easy to assume, but it’s simply not the case. Liposuction is a body
contouring procedure that removes fat from specific areas on the body for a
slimmer looking physique. The procedure is ideal for patients who are at their
ideal weight but still have some problem areas like love handles.

Assumption #5: I’ll see my final
results right after my plastic surgery procedure
For many plastic surgery procedures, your final results won’t
be seen immediately. That’s because there’s a recovery period where there’s
swelling or bruising. Take for example rhinoplasty. This is a procedure where
patients are required to take at least a week off from work to recover. Rhinoplasty
patients should be aware that there’ll be ongoing improvements with their nose
that can take up to 1 year to settle. The nose changes greatly over the course
of 2-12 months, especially in the nasal tip area. After that, patients can see their final results.

surgery? Let us know and maybe we can address it!

Fat Grafting: 3 Body Parts You Can Enhance With Your Fat
Not everyone is on board with having implants in their
breasts or butt. While we’re used to hearing about breast and butt implants,
there are other ways to increase the size of these regions and it’s through the
use of your own fat. The same thing goes for butts—butt implants are still used
to enhance butts, but Brazilian butt lifts are increasingly popular and the preferred
method of surgeons.
Fat grafting (also known as fat transplantation) creates a
win-win situation for patients. If you’ve got fat somewhere you don’t want,
like on your stomach or thighs, you can have it removed through liposuction.
That fat is then purified and transferred to other areas of your body where you
do want volume.

process and where on your body you can transfer your fat to.

Fat grafting to the breasts
When you have fat grafting done to your breasts, you’ll see
a modest increase in size in your breasts. Unlike breast implants, your final results
are dependent on how much donor fat you have available. The fat can come from your
abdomen, hips, arms or thighs. After choosing where the fat will come from,
your surgeon will administer local anesthesia in this region. They will perform
Vaser liposuction to separate your fat cells. These fat cells are then
suctioned, transferred and prepped for breast augmentation.
Fat grafting to the butt
The same process happens during Brazilian butt lifts. Since
fat grafting to the butt is considered as a large zone, that means a large
amount of fat is needed to shape and provide volume to the butt. It isn’t
unusual to inject between 200-400 cc of purified fat into each butt cheek. Because
of this, fat needs to be harvested from several areas. So while the butt
becomes bigger, the rest of the body becomes slimmer and contoured. The whole
procedure should take about 1.5 hours to complete.

Fat grafting to the face
If you find that your face isn’t as full as you want it to
be, you can change that without the need for dermal fillers. Some patients find
that parts of their faces have lost volume whether it’s from age or trauma.
Common areas where you may lose facial fat include: around the eyes and mouth,
jawline, temples and cheeks. A small
amount of donor site fat is required for this procedure—usually about 20-30 cc of
purified fat is needed. In areas that are non-mobile like the temple, bridge of
the nose and jawline, the grafts can last from 3-5 years. Fat grafts around the
lip areas can last from 1-2 years.
A little excess fat isn’t bad after all. If you’ve been thinking
about removing excess fat through liposuction, now you know you can actually
use that fat to transfer it to certain parts of your body for more shape and
volume. Book your appointment online or call us at 1-877-695-2835 for more information.

Brazilian Butt Lifts: How to Get a Bigger Butt with Your Own Fat
Remember back in the days when having a big butt wasn’t all
the rage like it is now? With big booties mentioned and shown almost everywhere
from songs, music videos and photos (Kim Kardashian breaking the internet,
ahem) it’s clear that being curvaceous down below is the thing now.
There’s a lot of science and research on big butts and why
people like them so much. This study revealed that women with larger than average butts give birth to children with
higher intelligence compared to women with smaller butts. These women are also
very resistant to chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. Research
also shows that men prefer curvy women because they’re seen as more fertile and
have bodies that are well-equipped for making babies.
As we all know, not everyone is born with the same physique or
curves—so you either deal with it or do something about it. In the last couple
of years, plastic surgeons have seen a higher demand for Brazilian butt lifts.
In the U.S, almost 10,000 Brazilian butt lifts were performed in 2013. One of
the major reasons for this trend is because many women want to emulate curvier
bottoms similar to Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj.
What is a Brazilian
butt lift?
Brazilian butt lifts involve taking fat from other areas of
the body and then transferring it to the butt for more volume and shapelier
curves. Typical areas where fat is taken from include the abdomen, hips and
outer thighs. A lot of fat from the donor site should be present to give enough
shape and volume to the butt. It’s like a win-win situation; you take fat from
an area you don’t want and have it placed in the area you want to plump up.
The rundown of how
fat transplantation works

After the fat and stem cells are harvested from the donor
sites, they have to be prepared before transplantation.
-The fat is spun down in a centrifuge. This separates the
fat and stem cells away from unwanted elements.
-The purified fat cells are transferred to syringes and then injections can be made to the butt.

What to expect after
your Brazilian butt lift
Brazilian butt lifts take about 1.5 hours to perform. After the procedure,
you’ll experience some soreness and stiffness in your donor sites and butt.
There are things to be mindful of after treatment, such as not sitting or lying
on your butt directly. Instead, you’ll likely be recommended to sleep on your
side and shift weight to the upper part of the back of your thighs when you sit.
This minimizes pressure on the fat cells.
How long your results last

How long your results last
The results from your Brazilian butt lift will last for years. A structural fat grafting technique places fat cells and fat derived stem cells about 1-2 milimetres from a blood supply. New blood vessels grow into these fat cells (this process is called neovascularization).
Once the blood supply returns to the grafted fat cells and
stem cells in the soft tissue of your butt, the grafted cells incorporate into
the regular buttock tissue. These cells will last for years. But of course, as
you get older, the buttock tissue will naturally undergo age-related fat and so
will the fat grafts.
So if you find that doing hundreds of squats or other
butt-lifting exercises aren’t giving you the results you want, you’ve got
options. Learn more about Brazilian butt lifts here or book your appointment online now.
